Kakapos were once abundant throughout NZ but due to habitat loss & introduced predators such as stoats & cats; their numbers have dwindled & there are now less than 150 mature individuals remaining . Kakapos mate for life & lay just 1-2 eggs per clutch . Kakapos sleep during the day & forage for food at night when they make loud booming calls which help them attract mates as well as warn other males away from their territory .
