What is Pennsylvania State Bird And Flower?

The Pennsylvania state bird is the Eastern Goldfinch and the state flower is the Mountain Laurel. The Eastern Goldfinch, also known as Carduelis tristis, is a small songbird that ranges in size from 4.5 to 5.75 inches long. They have a wingspan of 7.5 to 9.5 inches and weigh between 0.42 and 0.56 ounces.

The adult male goldfinch has a black cap on its head, a yellow body with black wings and tail, and white wing bars. The female goldfinch is similar in appearance to the male but lacks the black cap on her head, instead having a brownish-streaked crown. Both sexes have dark brown eyes and pale pink legs and feet.

Juvenile goldfinches are similar in appearance to adults but lack the black caps on their heads until they reach sexual maturity at around one year old. The Eastern Goldfinch breeds across much of eastern North America including all of Pennsylvania except for the northwestern corner of the state where they are replaced by their western counterpart, the American Goldfinch (Carduelis pinus). These birds typically nest in trees or shrubs, laying 3-6 eggs per clutch which hatch after 12-14 days of incubation by both parents.

The young fledge (leave the nest) after about 2 weeks but remain dependent on their parents for food for several more weeks before becoming fully independent around 8-10 weeks old. Diet consists primarily of seeds from weeds, grasses, and trees as well as some insects which are fed to nestlings exclusively while young birds learn how to forage for themselves effectively . Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is an evergreen shrub that ranges in height from 6 to 15 feet tall depending on location with older plants often developing multiple trunks giving them a tree-like appearance .

It has large leathery leaves that are dark green above and rusty brown beneath with pointed tips . In late spring through early summer , this plant produces showy clusters of white or pale pink flowers that bloom profusely covering the plant . Each individual flower has 10 petals arranged into two rows surrounding a central cluster of yellow stamens giving them a tubular shape .

After pollination , these flowers give way to small woody seed capsules containing numerous seeds that are dispersed by animals such as squirrels who eat them along with other nuts & berries .
