The Orange Bird is a cute, wide-eyed character created by Disney in the 1970s. With the body of a bird and an orange-shaped head, he was originally designed to promote Florida citrus at Walt Disney World. Today, Orange Bird has become a beloved part of Disney history and a fan-favorite among collectors and park visitors.

Though he was nearly forgotten for a while, Orange Bird has made a cheerful comeback in recent years. You can now find him on merchandise, snacks, and decorations all around Disney parks.

The Origin of Orange Bird

The Origin of Orange Bird

A Marketing Mascot for Florida Citrus

Orange Bird was born in 1970 thanks to a partnership between The Walt Disney Company and the Florida Citrus Commission. At the time, Disney was opening Walt Disney World in Florida and needed sponsors for attractions.

In exchange for sponsoring the Enchanted Tiki Room and a refreshment stand in Adventureland, the Florida Citrus Commission asked Disney to create a character to represent Florida oranges. That’s how the little Orange Bird came to life.

Designed by Disney Legends

The character was brought to life by Disney legends like Bob Moore and later promoted in animations and songs written by the Sherman Brothers, the famous duo behind songs from Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book.

What Does an Orange Bird Look Like

Orange Bird is easy to recognize:

  • A round orange head, like a Florida orange
  • Big, expressive eyes
  • Small green wings and a leaf stem on top
  • No voice—he communicates through thought bubbles
His quiet nature and adorable appearance made him a perfect character for children and families.

Where You Can Find Orange Bird at Disney

Adventureland in Magic Kingdom

Orange Bird made his original debut in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom. He was featured on signs, merchandise, and most famously at the Sunshine Tree Terrace, a small snack spot offering citrusy treats.

Though he faded from the spotlight for a while, he was reintroduced in 2012, and now his cheerful face appears throughout Adventureland again.

You’ll spot him:

  • On the Sunshine Tree Terrace signage
  • In colorful murals and decorations
  • On seasonal snack packaging
  • In plush toys and souvenir items

Epcot Flower & Garden Festival

One of the best places to see Orange Bird in action is during the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. Every spring, Disney features Orange Bird in:

  • Themed merchandise (cups, bags, pins)
  • Limited-edition snacks
  • Garden displays and topiaries
  • Exclusive Orange Bird sippers (which sell out quickly)

Tokyo Disneyland and Beyond

Believe it or not, Orange Bird is also popular overseas. In Tokyo Disneyland, Orange Bird has his own fanbase and a line of unique Japanese merchandise.

He has also appeared in Disney mobile games, vinyl figures, and designer collaborations.

Songs and Cartoons

The Orange Bird once had his own song, simply called The Orange Bird Song, performed by Anita Bryant, a popular singer at the time. The lyrics described Orange Bird’s sweet, silent nature and his citrus home in sunny Florida.

Though he didn’t star in many cartoons, he appeared in promotional shorts and print ads during the 1970s. His friendly face helped sell orange juice and sunshine—literally.

Comeback with Vintage Fans

Thanks to Disney nostalgia and a love for all things retro, Orange Bird has found a new generation of fans. He’s part of a larger wave of vintage Disney revival, especially among collectors who adore 70s-style design and quirky characters.

Social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are full of Orange Bird-themed photos, outfits, art, and pins.
