There are around 400 species of birds native to North Carolina. Some common examples include the American Goldfinch, Blue Jay, Carolina Chickadee, Northern Cardinal, and Tufted Titmouse. North Carolina is also home to a variety of different habitats which provide homes for different types of birds including forests, wetlands, coastal areas, and mountains.

There are more than 200 species of birds that call North Carolina home. From the state bird, the Northern Cardinal, to the American Goldfinch, there is a wide variety of feathered friends to be found in NC. Some other notable native birds include the Pileated Woodpecker, Bald Eagle, and Cooper’s Hawk.

One of the biggest birds in North Carolina when measuring by length is the great blue heron. These elegant birds have a wingspan of up to 7 feet and can stand nearly 5 feet tall. Another long bird is the Cooper’s hawk, which has a body length of up to 24 inches and a wingspan of up to 3 feet.

When it comes to height, there are two main contenders for tallest bird in North Carolina: The whooping crane and the Great Egret. Both of these Birds can stand over 4 feet tall!
